On Thursday, September 8, Buckingham Palace announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died at age 96, and her death will result in monumental changes for the royal family. The queen's son Charles is now King Charles III and his son Prince William is now heir to the throne, meaning William and his wife Catherine now have new royal titles.
William and his wife Catherine will now be known as the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, until William becomes king. According to NDTV, the royal couple will likely inherit the titles of Prince and Princess of Wales, as well, but for now, the focus remains on Queen Elizabeth and honoring her life and 70-year reign.
Upon Elizabeth's death, King Charles stated in part, "The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of great sadness for me and all members of my family [...] My family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held."
