The Bizarre Experience Rob Lowe Once Had With Tom Cruise

Before becoming Hollywood stars, friends Rob Lowe and Tom Cruise had their fair share of auditions. On Dax Shepard's "Armchair Expert" podcast, Lowe reminisced about working with Cruise on the iconic film "The Outsiders," including a bizarre (but ultimately bonding) moment between the two actors.

Once they were cast in "Outsiders," Francis Ford Coppola had Cruise and Lowe stay overnight with real-life greasers to prepare them for their roles, but this lodging arrangement is not what made Cruise go "ballistic," according to Lowe. The offending incident happened much earlier in their audition process.

"All of the L.A. people survived the L.A. auditions, and then the handpicked people had to go to New York to face the New York [auditions]”, Lowe stated. Once Lowe and Cruise arrived at one of Manhattan's elite hotels, the "Mission: Impossible" star had an epic fit when he found out they needed to share a room together.

"We check in and Tom finds out that we're sharing a room, and just goes ballistic," Lowe recalled, laughing. Ultimately, Cruise got over it, his and Lowe's first experience rooming together likely helped them power through their stay with greasers, which was far from a five-star hotel experience.
