Inside Carly Simon And James Taylor's Relationship

The Early Days

Carly Simon and James Taylor have known each other since they were children, as their families often spent summers on Martha's Vineyard, an island south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Although they weren't friends at the time, Taylor later told Rolling Stone in 1973, "I thought she was quite attractive, but she was, and still is, four years older than I was."

Marriage Prediction

In her "Boys in the Trees" memoir, published in 2016, Simon recalled the time she knew that she would marry Taylor after seeing him on the cover of Time magazine.
"How did I know this? People have asked me over the years. The only answer I can come up with is that he, James, was perfect for me in every way,” Simon shared.

An Offer To Cook

Simon reconnected with Taylor in 1971 and blurted out, "If you ever want a home-cooked meal while you're here in New York, I'd love to make lunch for you," when she saw him.
Taylor promptly responded to Simon's invitation, and the pair eventually ended up in Simon's apartment the same night, where the two ate a Sara Lee banana cake together.

Their Wedding

In a joint interview with Rolling Stone, Simon shared how Taylor initially shot down the idea of marriage when Simon first brought it up, but he changed his mind the same day.
The couple married on November 3, 1972, when Simon was 30 and Taylor was 26. They were together for about nine years before separating in 1981.

Becoming Parents

Simon and Taylor welcomed two children during their marriage. Their daughter Sarah Taylor was born in January 1974, and their son, Ben Taylor, was born in January 1977.
Sarah created her own record label called Blue Elbow and has released three albums in total. As for Ben, he has released five albums, as of this writing, since his debut in 2003.
